Xi'an, China
In June and July 2010, commencement of Xi’an’s Metro Line 1 began with the launch of two Robbins machines from Changlepo towards Wanshou Road Station—the first TBMs tunneling on the project. The city’s 26.4 km metro Line 1 will run from north to south through the downtown area. Two 6.2 m diameter Robbins EPBs are currently excavating the new rail route, which travels directly below some of Xi’an’s most sensitive heritage sites.

The 25.4 km (15.8 mi) Pinglu Tunnel is one of the world’s longest tunnels ever excavated by a single TBM. The excavation required expert maintenance in highly abrasive sandstone and corundum with coal seams up to 12 m (40 ft) wide.
