Main Beam TBM Spec Sheet

Robbins Main Beam machines feature High Performance (HP) options including large diameter cutters, variable frequency electric drive motors, and adaptable ground support systems. Their design consists of a rotating cutterhead that holds disc cutters (ranging from 17 inches to 20 inches in diameter), which are positioned for optimal boring.

EPB TBM Spec Sheet

Robbins has integrated over 60 years of TBM design and jobsite experience into our innovative Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBMs. Robbins EPBs are engineered with the same rugged structure and time-tested designs of our hard rock TBMs, but their function is purely for soft and mixed ground.

Double Shield TBM Spec Sheet

Robbins Double Shield TBMs are the long-haul specialists of the tunnel boring world. Since their development in 1972, Double Shield machines have excavated some of the world’s longest tunnels and achieved world records in the process. The secret lies in their ability to simultaneously bore and line the tunnel with segments, making for faster excavation even in difficult ground.

TBM Disc Cutters in the Field: Extreme Tunnel Conditions Inform the Latest Cutting Tool Advancements | Paper Author: Steve Smading

Extreme tunneling conditions call for the most robust TBM cutting tools possible—whether that includes hard and abrasive rock, long-distance tunnels of 15 km or more, or high water pressures.  This paper examines the use of disc cutters under extreme conditions and the design aspects making the difficult tunneling process possible. Resulting cutter design changes and more will be outlined in the presentation along with initial results from field and laboratory testing.

Difficult Ground Solutions: A Methodology for Enhanced TBM Performance in Challenging Conditions | Paper Author: Doug Harding

In many rock projects, the occurrence of squeezing ground, high inrushes of water, blocky rock, and other challenges is a real possibility.  Today’s highly adaptable TBMs are capable of tackling these tough conditions using cutting-edge technology coupled with modern ground investigation methods. Difficult Ground Solutions (DGS)—a series of adaptable and customizable features for shielded TBMs—can reduce risk to contractors and owners while providing accurate ground investigation.  This paper covers difficult ground solutions informed by field experiences, the tools it takes to be successful in such conditions, and how they are applied. Example projects will be discussed from the U.S., Turkey, Nepal, and more.

Robbins Disc Cutter Assembly - Time Lapse

Did you know that all Robbins disc cutters are assembled in Kent, Washington, USA? See how we do it in this time lapse construction of a Small Boring Unit disc cutter, 6.5 inches in diameter.

Robbins Crossover TBM: Breaking Records at TEP II

At Mexico City’s Túnel Emisor Poniente II (TEP II), a Robbins Crossover (XRE) TBM has excavated at record-breaking speeds through varying geology – even breaking a national record of 57 meters in a single day. Watch how the 8.7 m diameter Robbins Crossover machine will supplement an existing and overtaxed wastewater line built in the 1970’s.

Robbins Continuous Conveyors

The Robbins Company holds nearly 90% of world records for tunnel boring machines, and behind two thirds of those TBMs are continuous conveyor systems for rapid muck removal. Every conveyor system is customized to a project’s particular requirements, including ground conditions, tunnel alignment, and project location. This video explains how Robbins continuous conveyors transport muck efficiently and why they are sought after by contractors worldwide.
